A year ago, we published a deep dive into how Facebook only lets you export your social graph as a list of friends’ names which can’t be easily used to find them on other social networks. That would coerce Facebook to treat users better since leaving would actually be a viable option.

n

Taking these steps would show regulators that Zuckerberg isn’t just paying lip service in hopes of getting a more lenient sentence. It would demonstrate he’s ready to make change that serves society.

What concerns me is that he keeps talking as if he personally is making these changes himself. Facebook is a company… with many, many smart, experienced developers (most of which are more skilled than him) so why does Mark Zuckerberg talk like he is the one personally making all these changes? The reality is, is that none of these ideas are from him, and that they are actually from his management teams. Mark Zuckerberg shold not be trusted. He is psychologically unstable, has an ego that allows him to believe that he is personally responsible for Facebook’s fortunes, and to top it all…, you should try and block Mark Zuckerberg from your own account (as you have a right to do so according to the Facebook t&Cs). Mai. That’s all anybody needs to know about MZ’s character right there.

Regulations often act as a high cost of doing business that protects incumbents, especially when shaped by incumbents.

n

Expect everyone to be distracted by what the right regulations are, do they go too far/not far enough.

n

I expect no one to comment on how they might protect incumbents and make sure the next Instagram/etc can never rise up to challenge Facebook.

n

Small price for Mark Z to pay to protect his golden goose.

n

Itu2019s a well documented phenomena you read about in economics.

Exactly, these tech oligarchist are in power already so now they go along with rules that will secure that position. This is like guilded age all over again where the big monopolies did the same thing and allowing their entrenchment for decades. For example, Ma Bell. The Bell companies. It took a half a century before they were broken up.
nAnd anyone who wants to regulate content, wants to regulate freedom and expression and should be considered an enemy of such. This is how tyranny starts under the guise of “protection”.
